On November 6-7, the TLRVA High Adventure Crew is planning an Introduction to Backpacking outing so that we can invite and lead the new Navigators in our troops on a “simple” outing. The route chosen for this outing is on the Appalachian Trail; Rockfish Gap to Paul Wolfe shelter and return. It’s a 5-mile, each way, hike with little (or slow) elevation change and a beautiful fast-moving creek to camp by. All local TLRVA troops are invited to participate.
Some details: Rockfish Gap is at the top of Afton Mountain, right off of I-64. We’ll park at the first overlook on the Blue Ridge parkway (Afton Overlook) and hike south on the AT. Hiking should start by noon so we’re in camp well before sunset (5:00pm). P. Wolfe shelter has all the amenities of a 5-star AT lodging.
The ultimate goal of this outing is of course to develop our next generation of High Adventure Trail Life hikers ready to accomplish great feats in the outdoors. Please consider and share with your troops. Adventurers are welcome, but we would like to focus on Navigators for this outing. Cost will be determined as the number of hikers becomes defined. Recommend equipment lists are available for those interested.
Adventurers, stay tuned as an outing is being planned for you, affectionately known as the Between the Holidays Hike.
If you are interested in joining this outing, please send Frank Corwin a brief email expressing your interest and asking any questions. There will be an online planning meeting the evening of October 25 to discuss meals and logistics.
